Greek and Roman Curses

In association with the Hellenic Society

Esther Eidinow: Greek inscribed curses and the social historian

Margaret Mountford: “A plague on all their horses”: spells and curses at the races

Stephen Clews: Messages to the Goddess revealed… private thoughts of ordinary people…hear all about it

Stephen Clews spoke about the 130 curse tablets recovered from the hot spring at Bath, which give us an insight into many aspects of life at the edge of Empire. The tablets were recently inscribed on the UNESCO UK Memory of the World Register of outstanding documentary heritage and are the first documents from Roman Britain to be recognised in this way.

Watch the vidcast of the three lectures here.
