The Roman city of Venta Silurum - the ‘Market of the Silures’ - is one of the most evocative sites from the Roman period in Britain. Lying amidst the streets and houses of the village of Caerwent in Monmouthshire, visitors can explore the remains of a variety of ancient buildings including the forum-basilica complex and one of the last pagan temples in Britain, or walk along the city walls that still stand to an impressive height today.
Archaeologists have been digging in and around Caerwent for over 150 years, with some of the most important work undertaken by the National Museum of Wales during a series of ambitious campaigns in the 1980s and 1990s. To mark the 20th anniversary of the end of these excavations, the Monmouthshire Antiquarian Association with the Caerwent Historic Trust and Gwent County History Association are hosting a public Day-School on Saturday 20 June to present the latest insights from the NMW excavations, as well as the results of other recent and on-going research projects in and around Caerwent.
