June 3rd Centenary Celebration at the British Museum
To mark the 100th anniversary of the first meeting of the Roman Society on 3rd June, 1910, there was a celebration at the British Museum. The President of the Society, Andrew Burnett (as the Emperor Vespasian) was joined by Bettany Hughes, Mary Beard and a number of classicists, archaeologists and staff of the British Museum in costume. The Imperial Guard was provided by the re-enactment group Legio II Augusta. Classics students from Godolphin and Latymer School and Holland Park Comprehensive presented a Birthday Card to the Emperor.
In the morning, the President was interviewed on the Today Programme, and at lunchtime he delivered a public lecture on "Hordes and Hoards in Roman Britain" in the Clore Education Centre.
